Inside or outside: how often the seat goes to an insider
Internal promotions against outside hires, for permanent and interim appointments, and by industry where the numbers allow.
Of the 207 permanent CFO appointments whose filing settles the question, 77 went to someone already working at the company: 37 per cent. The rest, 130, were outside hires. For a further 40 the filing does not establish it, and they are left out of the share rather than guessed.
Interim appointments lean the other way. Of 85 interim appointments with a known answer, 67 went to an insider (79 per cent), which fits the job: a company covering a vacancy reaches first for the person nearest the books. The record has 96 interim appointments in all; the interim spells page follows them.
The internal-promotion field is the record's reading of each filing: true if the incoming officer already worked at the company, false if hired from outside, unknown if the filing does not establish it. Appointments filed June 1, 2026 to October 27, 2026; records as of October 28, 2026.
